THE GNOSTICS and THE NAG HAMMADI WRITINGS

The Gnostic Gospels: The 52 texts discovered in 1945 in Nag Hammadi, Egypt include ‘secret’ gospels poems and myths attributing to Jesus sayings and beliefs which are very different from the New Testament. It has come to students of early Christianity that those that followed the teachings as well as the person of Jesus were not as cohesive as many have thought. It can even be said that early Christianity, from the first century to the fourth might have even be called the wild west. Many groups in various geographical areas had their own versions. New Testament, as well the Old Testament, was a very rare thing and easily misinterpreted. Even the groups that considered themselves Gnostics (Knowlege) were splintered.

Gnosticism

Gnosticism is a collection of religious ideas and systems which coalesced in the late 1st century AD among Jewish and early Christian sects. These various groups emphasized personal spiritual knowledge above the orthodox teachings, traditions, and authority of religious institutions.
